Back stabbing, spying, double crossing and rampant infidelity - a typical family Christmas. Typical, that is, for the Plantagenets. King Henry II of England and the strong-willed Eleanor of Aquitaine battle over which of their sons will inherit the Crown.
Uneasy is the head on which the crown lies, and uneasy the truce between a matchless king and queen. This mundane history is glorified in language that is brilliant in its ability to characterize, its rhetorical impact, its actability, and its generative power. Few since Shakespeare have had such a marvelous gift for truly comic repartee.

This is a comedy. When in doubt, skip the angst.
Henry II, King of England (50's): Commanding nature. Volatile and emotional. He loves to play mind games, most especially with Eleanor. But most of all, he loves being king.
Eleanor of Aquitaine (50's): Stately, regal, and a commanding presence. Unlike Henry, she internalizes emotion and her manipulative nature. She also loves to play games, and nearly wins with her acid wit.
Richard the Lion Heart (late 20's to 30): A professional soldier and the strongest and toughest of the three heirs. He also has a complicated love/hate relationship with both parents.
Geoffrey (mid 20's): The middle son of this story. He feels overlooked and unloved. He has the scheming and conniving nature of his parents, but lacks the personal warmth.
John (late teens to 20): The youngest and most spoiled son. He constantly vacillates out of fear and weakness and is an easy target for his older brother, Geoffrey.
Alais (or Alice) (early 20's): The beautiful French princess, Philip's sister. She is betrothed to Henry's heir, but has been Henry's lover for many years. She loves Henry, but living with a family like this, she worries about her survival.
Philip II, King of France (20): He has been king for a few years and at the start of the story he is no match for Henry. As the story goes on, he learns how to play the games.
