  • Entertaining theatre to the Irving Community through careful selection of material presented
  • Opportunities for involvement by the community in all areas of theatrical production through open auditions, mentoring, special project support, and formal classes.
  • The Irving Community with the benefit of top local volunteer and professional expertise in all areas of theatrical production and arts management through the ability to involve participants from many disciplines.

An Overview

Incorporated in 1971, Irving Community Theater is celebrating 30 years of community theatre in Irving. In fact, that only represents the official age. Documents exist demonstrating the early birth of ICT as far back as 1949. Since those early beginnings, Irving Community Theater has grown to be one of the largest volunteer-based theatres in Texas. ICT, along with other arts groups, was instrumental in working with the City of Irving to establish the Irving Arts Board and the Irving Arts Center. The resulting partnership enables ICT to develop and attract the most qualified and motivated volunteers. Typically over 150 different individuals contribute to each season. Although a small stipend is paid for certain production positions such as directors and designers, ICT continues to be operated through volunteer support. One part-time administrator is employed to handle the key day-to-day administrative functions.

A working board, whose members are elected by the membership and typically possess significant community theater production experience, manages ICT. Board members are expected to serve as producers for the regular season productions and to head major operating committees.

ICT has established a formal special projects program that allows any member to submit a proposal for a special project to the board. When approved, the submitter assumes the role of producer for that project, while the board provides mentoring and policy guidance. The project receives both financial and organizational support from ICT.

ICT’s activities are supported by an organization that includes the ICT Studio, providing dedicated rehearsal space in addition to a costume shop and storage space. Community outreach includes a mailing list of over 3,000 names, a regularly published newsletter and this website.

ICT Programs and Projects

ICT MainStage: ICT produces a regular season of 5 main stage shows a year and enjoys a continually expanding subscription base. This continued success has allowed ICT to establish a level of financial stability that would be the envy of most theatres, and provides the opportunity to take on special projects.

ICT Children’s Theatre: ICT established the ICT Children’s Theatre to provide high quality training to young people from 8 to 18. The emphasis of the Children’s Theatre is to provide a solid basis of theatre skills, and classes are structured around a curriculum based on the experience of established drama schools in both England and America.

ICT Guild: The Guild exists to provide additional financial and community support to ICT.

Festivals: Irving Community Theater has hosted both local and state festivals as part of the American Association of Community Festival AACT/Fest competition. ICT is the chair organization for the Texas Non-Profit Theatres Quad II. This affiliation provides access to similar theatres across Texas.
